The Forum, the streets, the painted rooms and the mountain that closes every view north. Every photograph here was taken inside the excavations, at Herculaneum, or on Vesuvius, by the operators running these tours.

The Forum pictures show what the square was designed around. The facade of the Temple of Jupiter closes the north end, aligned on Mount Vesuvius. The volcano therefore stands directly behind the temple in almost every frame. Nobody planning that alignment in the second century BC meant it as a memento mori; it has become one.

The street pictures change how people imagine the place. Basalt slabs polished by traffic. Kerbs raised a foot above the roadway. Cart ruts worn deep enough to catch a modern ankle, and stepping stones set across a carriageway that doubled as a drain.

Then the interiors. Red and yellow grounds still hold their colour after nineteen centuries. Mosaic floors lie intact under the dust. And in the Villa of the Mysteries, outside the city gates, the Dionysiac frieze runs life-size round three walls of a single room.

A note on what is not here. A third of the photographs supplied with these listings show somewhere else on the Bay of Naples: Positano from the cliff road, the Faraglioni off Capri, the Amalfi seafront. None of them is in this gallery. Everything below is somewhere a guided tour actually goes.
