Pompeii and Vesuvius in One Day: 4 Ways to Do Both, Compared

Can you do Pompeii and Vesuvius in one day?

Yes, and the arithmetic is short. The 808 bus takes 55 minutes each way between the excavations and the volcano. The national park allows no more than two hours for the walk to the crater and back. A standard guided visit of Pompeii runs two hours. That is just under six hours of your day before you have eaten or waited for a bus.

What gets squeezed is Pompeii. Two hours is a first look at a very large site, and what each length of visit reaches is set out in how long you need at Pompeii.

You are also dealing with two separate bodies and two separate entries. The ancient city belongs to the Archaeological Park, whose standard entry is Pompeii Express at €20. The crater belongs to the Vesuvius National Park, which charges €11.68. Neither one admits you to the other.

Which should you visit first, Pompeii or Vesuvius?

Both orders work, and your month decides between them. Compare the last time each gate lets you in:

• November to February: the crater's last access is 15:00 and Pompeii's last entrance is 15:30. Go up the volcano first and keep the excavations for after.
• April to June, and September: 17:00 at the crater against 17:30 at Pompeii. Either order fits, so let the forecast choose.
• July and August: 18:00 at the crater against 17:30 at Pompeii. This is the one stretch of the year when the crater is the later of the two.
• March and October: the crater's last access is 16:00. Pompeii changes its hours on 16 March and again on 15 October, so check which side of those dates you fall on.

The size of the crowd differs too. From 16 March to 14 October Pompeii admits you in two slots, and the morning one holds 15,000 places against 5,000 in the afternoon. If you climb first, book your afternoon entry to the excavations before you travel.

How do you get from Pompeii to Mount Vesuvius?

You take EAV bus line 808, the only public link the national park names from Pompeii. It runs every day. If you arrive on the Circumvesuviana from Naples or Sorrento, get off at Pompei Villa dei Misteri: the bus stops opposite the station.

The 808 bus, up and down

These are the times of the timetable in force from 1 October 2026. The bus starts at Piazza Anfiteatro, calls at the Villa dei Misteri stop five minutes later and reaches Piazza Porta Marina Inferiore eight minutes after it set off. So each of Pompeii's three gates, Porta Marina included, has a stop on the way up.

Coming down, buses leave the 1,000 m square at 9:35, 11:00, 12:00, 12:40, 13:10, 14:00, 14:50, 15:30 and 16:50. Each one reaches Piazza Anfiteatro 55 minutes later. The way down runs along Via Plinio and does not list the Villa dei Misteri stop, so plan to finish at Piazza Anfiteatro. EAV reissues this timetable through the year. By car

Leave the A3 Naples–Salerno motorway at Torre del Greco, not at Pompei Scavi, and follow the SP144 to the car park at 800 m. From there you have a shuttle run by the Comune di Ercolano at €1 each way, about four minutes, or a walk of about 30 minutes. There is no parking at the 1,000 m square itself.

The park names one more way up without a car. From Ercolano Scavi station, taxis and private shuttles leave for the volcano.

Vesuvius crater tickets: online only, and timed

The crater is the one part of this day you cannot improvise. The park sells entry through a single authorised online seller, and nothing is sold at the gate.

• Price: €11.68 full, or €9.55 if you are under 25 and carry ID. Children under six go free with an adult, and their free entry is still booked online.
• Slots: 50 places for each ten-minute slot, on sale 30 days ahead.
• Last minute: ten more per slot appear 30 minutes before it. You can buy them only over the wifi at the entrance, and since 11 April 2026 they carry your name.
• Tolerance: the gate admits you from 120 minutes before to 120 minutes after the time you booked, within opening hours. That is the slack a day built on a bus needs. A last-minute entry is tighter: 30 minutes before to 15 after.
• Drivers: buy your parking only after you hold the crater entry.

What is the walk to the crater like?

You start at the square at 1,000 m, at the end of the provincial road from Ercolano. A wide path climbs from there in hairpins over ash and lapilli, past small lava flows from 1944, the volcano's last eruption. The hut where the accompanied visit begins stands at 1,118 m. The Capannuccia at 1,170 m is as far as you can go at present, because the rest of the loop is closed for safety works.

The park rates the path as low in difficulty but steep, and caps the walk at two hours there and back. Every group of 20 is accompanied above 1,000 m by a guide from the park's Presidio Permanente Vulcano Vesuvio, who is there for your safety.

At the top you look into an ellipse up to 580 m across, with fumaroles on its inner walls. Turn round and the Gulf of Naples is below you, with Sorrento and Capri further along. The upper rim on the north and east side is closed to the public.

Two practical points. There are no public toilets at the square at present, so go before you board the bus. And the park asks you to wear proper shoes, because you are walking on ash the whole way.

Crater opening hours, month by month

Bus times are from Piazza Anfiteatro, on the timetable in force from 1 October 2026. In winter the 14:30 reaches the square at 15:25, after the crater's last access, which is why you take the 13:30. From April to September the last bus up arrives with hours to spare, and the limit that binds you is the last bus down at 16:50.

One more rule applies in every month: your visit has to end within one hour of the last permitted access. Pompeii's side of the calendar, crowds included, is in the best time to visit Pompeii.

What happens when the weather closes the crater?

The park shuts its ticketing and the path automatically on any day the regional Civil Protection authority issues a weather alert of orange level or higher. You do not have to ask for your money back. Entries for the closed slots are refunded automatically to the card you paid with, within 60 days, presale fee included.

The bus stops short as well. On 26 March 2026 EAV cut the 808 back because access to its terminus was banned for bad weather, and the ordinary route returned the next day. Pompeii stays open through weather like that.

Doing it yourself: two plans by the clock

Both plans use the 808 and a crater entry you have already bought online. Pompeii does not allow you to leave and come back in, so finish inside before you go, and eat between the two halves.

Plan A: Pompeii first

1. Start with a two-hour guided walk of the excavations, as early in the morning as you can book it.
2. Catch the midday bus: 12:00 from Piazza Anfiteatro, 12:05 from the Villa dei Misteri stop.
3. You reach the 1,000 m square at 12:55. Book your crater slot for about then.
4. Come down on the 14:50 or the 15:30. The last bus of the day leaves at 16:50.

Plan B: Vesuvius first

1. Take the first bus: 8:30 from Piazza Anfiteatro, 8:35 from the Villa dei Misteri stop.
2. You are at the 1,000 m square at 9:25, soon after the path opens at 9:00.
3. Come down on the 11:00 or the 12:00. You reach Piazza Anfiteatro at 11:55 or 12:55.
4. Eat, then walk into Pompeii by the Piazza Anfiteatro gate with the afternoon ahead of you.

Plan B is the one for November to February, when the crater's last access is 15:00. It also suits a hot month, because you climb before the heat of the day.

Is Vesuvius worth adding, or should it be Herculaneum?

Add the volcano if you want to look into the thing that buried the city and you have a clear day for it. Leave it out if you are visiting between November and February on a late start, because the gate's last access is 15:00. Leave it out too if two hours in Pompeii already feels short to you. Your other second stop is the other buried town, Herculaneum, which sits on the same railway line as Pompeii and asks for no climb at all.
