Sorrento is thirty minutes from Pompeii on a commuter railway, which makes it the one base where the excavations genuinely work as a morning rather than an expedition. That is the whole argument for this tour: it fits the visit into the shape of a coastal holiday instead of replacing a day of it.
The mechanics are simple and they are the part that goes wrong when people do it alone. You meet Amelia, the operator's assistant, at Sorrento station; she points you at your guide, and you board the train together. Forty-five minutes later you are at Pompei Villa dei Misteri, two minutes from the main gate, with the entry ticket already handled.

Where you meet, and how to find it
The meeting point is Sorrento train station, at Piazza Giovanni Battista de Curtis. Be specific about who you are looking for: several similar tours leave from the same station, so find the Belmare Travel staff member rather than the first group you see. She will show you where to wait for your guide, and you board the train together.
There is no hotel pickup, and the tour goes from Sorrento station only. Meeting points at other stations and train tickets from other departure points are outside this fare. If you are staying along the coast at Positano or Amalfi, the SITA bus into Sorrento is the connection, and it is worth allowing a generous margin for it in season. Know before you go
- Expect to stand on the train. The Circumvesuviana is a commuter line and travellers describe standing in both directions.
- Bring ID for children. Under-18s enter Pompeii free, but you still book their place on the tour.
- Wear closed shoes. Basalt paving, deep cart ruts and high kerbs.
- Take water, a hat and sunscreen. The operator's own list asks for all three, and there is almost no shade.
- Do not exit the site during the free time. The ticket is single-entry, and the listing warns you in writing.

Is the train ticket really included?
Yes, both ways, and it is valid all day. That is what lets you stay on at Pompeii after the guided part ends and come back on a later service.
Can I do this from Naples instead?
Not on this fare — the train ticket runs from Sorrento only, and the listing excludes departures from other stations. From Naples the Circumvesuviana takes about thirty-five minutes and the tour that meets at the gate is the one to book.
Is it suitable if my ship is in port?
The operator lists it as not suitable for cruise guests. A commuter train has no guarantee behind it, and an all-aboard time does.
How long am I actually inside Pompeii?
