From there the route runs through the Forum and out along the main streets to the Teatro Grande, with a group capped at twenty per guide. It is the format most first-time visitors book, and the reason is arithmetic: it costs a few euros more than the ticket alone.

Why two hours with a guide beats four hours alone
Pompeii labels almost nothing. Street corners carry the regio and insula numbering that Giuseppe Fiorelli imposed in 1858, houses carry a small sign, and that is close to the whole of it. Walk in with a ticket and no preparation and you are in a very large quantity of well-preserved masonry with no way of telling the House of the Faun from a shop.
What this fare buys is legibility. Two hours of it, from somebody whose training is the site itself rather than the city generally. The route is the park's own Path 1 in substance — the one it publishes as its two-hour suggestion — and it is built around the Forum, which is where a first visit has to start because everything else refers back to it.
The other thing worth understanding is what the Pompeii Express ticket in this fare does and does not open. It covers the whole walled city and excludes the suburban villas, which means the Villa of the Mysteries is not on this route. If that frieze is the reason you are coming, you want a different ticket grade and the ticket guide explains exactly why.
And it is short. Two hours reaches roughly a tenth of the streets, and travellers say so in review after review. The ones who came away happiest treated the guided part as the introduction and then walked the rest themselves, which the ticket allows as long as you do not step outside the gate.
How the two hours run
- Meet at Porta Marina Superiore. The main entrance, opposite the Hortus restaurant. Askos staff hold a sign at the entrance gates.
- Through the gate. Ten minutes on the Express ticket, straight into the ancient city.
- The Basilica and the Forum. The law courts, the square and its granaries, about forty minutes.
- Via dell'Abbondanza. The main commercial street, walked rather than stopped at.
- House of Menander and the Stabian Baths. Fifteen minutes each, an elite house and the oldest baths on the site.
- The Lupanar and the House of the Faun. Fifteen minutes each, and the two busiest rooms in Pompeii.
- Finish at the Teatro Grande. The theatre cut into the hillside. Stay on afterwards if you want to.
Who this suits, and who should book something else
Book this if
- It is your first visit and you want the ticket and the guide in one fare.
- You are already at Pompeii, or staying in Naples or Sorrento and travelling in independently.
- You want the lowest fare we list that still comes with a licensed archaeologist.
- You would rather have two good hours than four unstructured ones.
Book something else if
- The Villa of the Mysteries is why you are coming. The Express ticket in this fare excludes the suburban villas. Take the Sorrento express tour only if you are coast-based; for the villa itself see the private options, which run three hours.
- You are starting the day in Rome. This one meets at the gate. The day trip from Rome collects you at Piazza del Popolo and brings you back.
- You use a wheelchair. This one is not suitable, on account of steps, ramps and a steep climb, and the operator asks you to contact them about a private alternative. The park's own step-free route starts at the other gate — see the site map.

Where you meet, and how to find it
The meeting point is Porta Marina Superiore, the main entrance to the excavations, on Via Villa dei Misteri opposite a restaurant called Hortus. Askos Tours staff wait at the entrance gates holding a sign with the company name.
Put Via Villa dei Misteri 2 into the map rather than "Pompeii", and take the Circumvesuviana Naples–Sorrento line to Pompei Villa dei Misteri, which is a two-minute walk away. The other two stations serving the town land you at the opposite end of the site — one traveller on this tour records being sent to the wrong entrance by their hotel and losing the group. Know before you go
- Wear closed shoes with a grip. The streets are basalt with cart ruts and high kerbs, and flip-flops will not do.
- Bring water, a hat and sunscreen in summer. The operator asks for it and travellers on this tour record over 40°C on the stones.
- Carry ID for anyone under eighteen. Under-18s enter free and the rate is checked at the gate.
- Mobility scooters are not allowed inside the park, and this tour is not recommended for travellers with mobility difficulties.
- Dogs up to 10 kg only, on a lead and carried inside buildings.
